January 10, 1849 (Wednesday)

In the Counting House all day.  Passed the evening at home reading.  The weather is intensely cold, colder than it has been for some years; it is an unusually long cold spell, too.

Delightful sleighing in the country.

According to the January 11, 1849 Philadelphia Inquirer, the thermometer reading at 5pm on the 10th was 19 degrees.
