January 26, 1849 (Friday)

Went to the Theatre this evening, to see the new play Monte Christo.  Very good piece and draws large audiences.  Some of the scenery is splendid.

Nathan saw the play The Count of Monte Cristo based on the Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) novel first published in America in 1846. He enjoyed the performance at either the Arch Street Theatre or the Walnut Street Theatre.  Inexplicably, both theaters were showing the same play on the same night! The Arch Street Theatre was located on the north side of Arch Street between 6th and 7th Streets. The site is now occupied by the Federal Reserve Bank. For more information on the Walnut Street Theatre see the entry for January 8.
