February 3, 1849 (Saturday)

Friend Morgan called on me this evening to accompany him either to a grand concert by Mad. Bishop or go hear the Virginia Serenaders, which latter we did, as the price of admission to the concert was rather too “salty,” being $1.

“Friend Morgan” is James H. Morgan, Nathan’s frequent companion.

“Mad. Bishop” is Madame Anna Riviere Bishop. For more on her, see the entry for January 17.

For more on the Virginia Serenaders, see the entry for January 18.

While $1 is more than 10 percent of Nathan’s weekly wages, we can wonder if Messrs. Morgan and Beekley threw over the estimable and highly cultured Madame Bishop for the decidedly coarser Serenaders based only on economy.
