February 5, 1849 (Monday)

What a change in the weather! Yesterday morning was as clear and bright as one could wish, but the afternoon and evening was cloudy.  This morning nature wore another dress—a dress of the purest white.  The snow was 6 or 8 in. deep and continued falling very fast until about 10 o’clock.  Passed the evening at home.

The February 6, 1849 Philadelphia Inquirer reported, “Our city was alive with sleigh bells during yesterday and last evening.”
