February 7, 1849 (Wednesday)

Another change, from moderate to bitter cold weather.

Have been unusually busy today with a number of reports of the operations at the Cumberland works, an account of which has not heretofore been kept.

Called on the Misses S—n, but they were not in.

One of the rare occasions when Nathan writes about his work.  This is the only mention in his journal of the Cumberland works, presumably a foundry or factory in either Cumberland, Pennsylvania or perhaps Cumberland, New Jersey.  The former being some 130 miles from Philadelphia and the latter approximately 50 miles distant.
