March 13, 1849 (Tuesday)

Clear and beautiful in the morning, but cloudy in the evening.

Went to see “Murdock.” He is certainly a splendid actor; Miss Fisher also acts very well.

For more information on James Murdoch and Alexina Fisher, see the entry for March 6.

For his twenty-five or fifty cents, Nathan would have seen two plays that night at the Walnut Street Theatre. The first was the now obscure Walter Raymond with Mr. Murdoch in the title role.  The second play was The Elder Brother, a five act comedy by Francis Beaumont (1584–1616) and John Fletcher (1579–1625) with Mr. Murdoch in the role of Charles, the scholar, and Ms. Fisher playing the role of Angelina. New York theater critic John William Stanhope Hows (1797–1871) created an alternate version of this play, which is likely the version Nathan saw.  The AAS has a copy of the Hows effort.
