April 12, 1849 (Thursday)

Beautiful weather; the squares also are fresh and beautiful.

Did a little shopping the early part of the evening, after which I assisted Mrs. A—h, our landlady, to put down carpeting.

We do not know for sure the identity of Nathan’s landlady.  His handwriting is generally very good, but “Mrs. A—h” is possibly “Mrs. A—d.”  If so, a very likely candidate is Mrs. Abigail Hollingshead, who had a boarding house at 124 Mulberry (now Arch) Street (see the entry for January 3).  Nathan helped to “fit up” the house on April 11 and today he is putting down carpet.  Hopefully, he got a break on the rent.
