May 30, 1849 (Wednesday)

Today makes the full week of wet weather, tho’ not quite so cold as it was a few days ago.  The wind is from the north East, which is rather an ill omen for clearing.

Visited the Academy of Fine Arts this evening in company with Mr. Hubbard.

For more information on the Academy of Fine Arts, see the entry for May 9.

Nathan will be out with Mr. Hubbard several more times in 1849 but never gives more clues regarding his identity.  McElroy’s Philadelphia City Directory lists ten men with the surname Hubbard in 1849.  One of them, Francis, is a clerk but, according to the 1850 U.S. Census, he was about twelve years older than Nathan.
