July 23, 1849 (Monday)

The mornings and evenings seem to become cool unusually early this season, while the middle of the day is oppressively warm.

Was called on this evening by friend Morgan, and at his suggestion we went to the Museum—performance rather poor.

There were a few ‘museums’ in Philadelphia in 1849 (e.g., Chinese Museum), however, it’s likely Nathan and friend Morgan went this day to Barnum’s Museum. Barnum’s remained open throughout the summer and was continuously advertising new curiosities and entertainment.  Nathan first went to P.T. Barnum’s entrant in the crowded Philadelphia amusement field on June 2.
