August 1, 1849 (Wednesday)

Pleasant day.  Old Grandmother is very feeble, entirely helpless, and sister Sarah has a pretty hard time of it.

Nathan’s paternal grandmother, Catharine Beekley, was nearly ninety-five in 1849 and had been a widow since at least 1810. Sarah C. Beekley (4 Mar 1825–25 Dec 1896) was one of Nathan’s three older sisters (there may have been seven Beekley siblings but it is not clear how many survived to adulthood).  Sarah married East Nantmeal-native Isaiah Guest, a farmer,  about 1855 and the pair had three daughters, Ida May, Catharine, and Mary. Sarah would also later care for her bed-ridden father, John Beekley, when he was in his late 80s.  She is buried in the Pughtown Baptist Church Cemetery in Pughtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
