October 7, 1849 (Sunday)

Cloudy today again.

Went to St. Mary’s cathedral this forenoon to hear the music, and was not disappointed; it was splendid.

Went to St Andrew’s this evening—Dr. Stevens preached.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the second Catholic church in Philadelphia, was founded in 1763.  Both George Washington and John Adams attended services there. The church, which is still active and is a Philadelphia landmark, is situated on Fourth Street, above Spruce, a location it has maintained since 1838. Nathan also went to St. Mary’s on March 18.

For information on Reverend William Bacon Stevens, D. D. and St. Andrew’s Church, see the entry for January 21.
